The Northern Forest Center, in partnership with Community Geographics, CRO Planning and Design, and the Upper Valley Trails Alliance, will host a full-day workshop on smartphone-based tools for trail planning, mapping, and maintenance on July 21, 2026, at the Ascutney Outdoor Center in Brownsville, Vermont.

The workshop is for Vermont-based trail managers and will give participants a hands-on introduction to mobile mapping technology on Mt. Ascutney’s trail network. Attendees will practice collecting trail data, documenting infrastructure, and flagging maintenance issues in the field, while learning how to seamlessly transfer data between their phone and computer.

No prior GIS experience is necessary — the training is designed to welcome participants of all skill levels. The workshop will highlight no- and low-cost applications to ensure accessibility for organizations working with a range of budgets.

Registration is $25. All participants will receive a code for a 60-day trial of CalTopo Pro.

Funding for the training was made possible by a grant through the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service.
