The journey to approval of an expanded trail network in Willoughby State Forest (Sutton, Vermont) continued with a presentation to the Forest Parks and Recreation, District 5 Stewardship committee by members of the Vermont Horse Council on November 13, 2023. Championed by members, Lisa LaFont and Jim Nickerson, a two-phase plan is proposed which would add forest trails to the current CCC gravel road network in the state forest. The proposed Phase 1 plan would add 12.2miles of trail, additional trailer parking and a primitive camping site. The longer-term Phase 2 plan would add 2.2 miles of trail and connect the western and eastern parts of the forest which would result in 21.2 miles of equestrian trails within the Forest; increased from the current 6.8 miles now available for equestrian use. We are expecting feedback from the Stewardship committee in December.
